This

Sovereign.

This is a word I take a lot of comfort in. It describes the God I serve and love. He is not of my own making. He is self-existent. I know Him by the description He has given of Himself in the Bible and by the actual presence of His Spirit living in me.

He is sovereign. That means there is NOTHING outside of His control. He calls Himself

I AM THAT I AM

And He loves me. It doesn’t get much better than this.

His creation testifies to His power (and that’s just the parts we can see and begin to understand). Billions of galaxies were made by Him, yet He says He knows how many hairs are on my head. He knows my thoughts before they become words. He has planned my steps and is watching out for me along every one of them. What intimacy this is!

I believe He is sovereign, but do I believe He loves me like this? If I do, why do I get afraid? Anxious?

Believing God really loves me like this may take more faith than believing He is sovereign. But just as I only have to look up at the stars, or down at a dandelion and breathe in deeply with my mind and heart as I absorb the beauty and the intricacy of creation to be reminded of His sovereignty, so do I merely have to look up to the cross to be reminded of His love.

The sacrifice of His perfect son, Jesus, for love of me is the only evidence I need to know I am truly loved.

“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13

These two truths, that God is sovereign and that He loves me, are the most powerful beliefs in my life. They do more to define my thoughts, words, and actions than anything else. To the degree that I embrace them, they have the potential to bring deep joy and peace to every moment of all my days.
